What is your background and what qualifies you to represent the people of Harrisburg?
While on Town Council from 2005 to 2009, I also served as liaison to the Centralina Council of Government and served as their Treasurer. I have been on the board of a Big Brothers, Big Sisters Chapter and have volunteered literally thousands of hours with the Harrisburg Youth Association. I started up the Reading First program at Harrisburg Elementary, coached at the Middle and High School and was a member of the Athletic Booster club. I have interacted with thousands of Harrisburg residents through those various venues and have a good idea of what the community of Harrisburg wants.
What do you see as the issues facing Harrisburg right now?
The biggest feedback I get from residents are that they are concerned with the amount of growth that Harrisburg is going through and the volume of traffic, especially on route 49. There are good number of places to eat in town but there is a desire for more high-end dining and shopping. With most residents heading out of town to work, there would be a void for restaurants to flourish during lunch time unless we attract more businesses. Our community also has a growing segment of elderly that have lived here for 30 years or more that needs our attention.
Why are you the best person for this office?
I have served on Town Council and understand that there is a learning curve for new members that can take a significant time to come up to speed. I am open to hearing all sides of any issue and respect any and all opinions. I understand that consensus with both Council and Community, in addition to being prepared for every meeting, is critical for success. I have also demonstrated that while on council that I will do whatever necessary to support the wishes of the community, even though I may be vilified by some for doing so.
What goals do you have for Harrisburg, if elected?
Besides the obvious, which is controlling growth to make sure we are making the right decisions about developments and traffic, I would like to establish a Land Preservation Fund which would enable the town to buy up property and prevent it from being built upon and be able to either leave it unaltered or convert it into green space that the community can enjoy. I would also like to form a Senior Council to give our aging population a voice in the community and also to pair them with members of our Youth Council to provide them with their experience.
